14.Jul.2008 .mobi domain price sure to drop?

Why is the price of the .mobi domain still so high? The original idea was for people/organisations to purchase domain names with this top-level domain and deliver internet to mobile devices. It never quite felt to me to be a very credible idea that would last long term and was more of a cash cow for companies to sell a few more names.
The strength of mobile browser development which I have experienced with Nokia s60v3 browsers and now encapsulated in the mighty iPhone safari browser have rendered the notion of a mobile specific site to be virtually redundant.

Sure mobile browsers are nowhere near (for now) able to match the desktop experience for a number of reasons; the obvious being physical limitations of screen size. Nokia’s safari browser has a quick scan option of large pages and sections can be ‘zoomed into.’ Also of course Apple has reinvented the mobile browser with its polished approach to zooming as opposed to scrolling, this has meant that desktop sized html sites can be presented as is on the iPhone device.

This leads me to think that as the power of mobile browsing increases, whats the point in paying extra for a domain name to advertise the mobile experience?

I would have thought it’s better/efficient/cheaper to design a site that can be viewed in multiple browsers and instead of making the user work out which domain name they should hit, have one site – one address and intelligently manage the direction they should navigate by using user agent detection for example.

I suppose if the price starts to drop on .mobi domain maybe I’ll be proved right.
